Facebook and Instagram users furious over AI training with user posts: ‘F–k now’

It is causing users to short circuit.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, rolled out artificial intelligence that is being trained on people’s posts, sparking a backlash against social media sites.

While the announcement that Meta would use public posts to train its AI model, a program similar to ChatGPT called Llama 2 — which has since had an updated version — was made a year ago, a recent plan to data collection on UK users in the coming months is causing concern and anger from many people across the pond.

The September 13 announcement introduced the aim to have generative AI that “will reflect British culture, history and idiom”.

In June, Meta halted its more personal AI development in the United Kingdom because it ran afoul of European Union privacy laws, according to the Guardian. Last month, governing bodies there agreed to allow an experimental AI effort under close scrutiny, the paper reported.

Disturbed users said that Meta could “immediately delete,” according to the Daily Mail.

“The meta wants you to beg them not to train their AI on your stuff – at their discretion,” added another.

The Post contacted Meta for comment.

The company said that “people’s private messages with friends and family” are off limits, as is content from users under 18. It also allows for an opt-out feature called an “objection form” that is strictly for the UK.

As of June, the privacy policy was updated to take public data from US users, according to the MIT Review.

The paper noted that, due to the lack of privacy laws, not much can be done to opt out of the state.

Despite this, viral but nonsensical posts are making the rounds on social media with a text message hoax that people think will allow them to opt out of AI model training.

“Since Meta is now a public entity, all members must post a similar statement. If you don’t post at least once, it will be assumed that you are okay with them using your information and photos,” read the fake statement, which was shared by Tom Brady, Julianne Moore and Ashley Tisdale, among 600,000 others.
